Functional Pattern: Opening doors


  • Our scene is a potion shop with a shopkeeper. This is a classic video-game shop where you can buy potions to help you on your travels. But, there’s also a secret elixir in the shop that is necessary later in the game. To make sure you don’t miss it, we put a “!” over the shopkeeper's head, as conversing with him opens the secret passage. The “!” actually serves two purposes here: to tell players where to buy their potions, and to open the secret passage.
  • The secret passage is our functional pattern, as it's a distinct and different area demarcated by a door. We also made the wall look a little suspicious and obvious, so that players might guess there’s a door there.
